February 18, 2021

As temperatures here in Middletown, KY, continue to drop, you’ll be relying more and more on your heating system. If you’re experiencing issues with your home’s heat, the problem may stem from a faulty thermostat. While HVAC repairs should never be a DIY job, here are a few ways you can troubleshoot your malfunctioning thermostat.

Verify the Temperatures

Your thermostat has two temperatures: the current temperature of the room and the temperature you have set on the thermostat. If your thermostat isn’t working correctly, one or both of these temperatures may be displaying incorrectly on the thermostat. If either the room temperature or the set temperature is wrong, you need to consider calibrating your thermostat.

Calibrate the Thermostat

If you feel like the room temperature on your thermostat is incorrect, you may need calibrate it. Get another thermometer to gauge the temperature inside your home and see if your thermostat is reading incorrectly. If it is, there are usually steps in your thermostat owner’s manual that will guide you through recalibrating it.

Clean the Thermostat

If your heating system won’ turn off, your thermostat may be causing the problem. Even though you may not think about needing to clean your thermostat, doing so is an important part of HVAC maintenance. If your system runs constantly, consider taking the front cover off your thermostat and gently cleaning the interior components with a soft cloth.
